Watch full movie online for free movies. This is an interesting video and I enjoyed it, and what I'm about to write is only tangentially related. As someone who grew up close to Hårga, this film leaves somewhat of a sour taste in my mouth, and I think the eclectic use of anything which seems to an American to be related to Scandinavia and slightly occult kind of annoyed me. Ättestupa, the blood eagle, runes, using Hårga as a backdrop presumably because of the nearby Hårgaberget, etc, it just seems like a lot of different, random elements were thrown in just because it fits the aesthetic, and without much more thought than that. I think it's a good film but I'm annoyed at its location and how it uses it, essentially. As a sidenote, you could just google how to pronounce å and ä, you know ! You've got the same sounds in English.

The person I went to watch this with literally had to walk out of the theater because he had such bad anxiety. This movie is wild. Most of these “sins” are explained in the movie. This gives me 'the wicker man' vibes. Just like how she sees her mom at the end of the competition, isnt the girl she bumps into her sister? When she committed suicide there was yellow vomit on her shirt and the girl throws up but we dont see her on the ground, like she disappears? Is there directors commentary on this. This guy's voice drives me mad - I think he must be on something as well? Other than that I loved the quirkiness of the film and expected it to be full of more terror, but I'm still thinking it about 5 hours after watching it on Blu-Ray Director's Cut - Excellent.

Although this starts much darker and doesn't have that diy aesthetic, it's hewn from the same tree. A bunch of mostly naive Americans follow their Swedish friend to his commune back home for a summer adventure. Of course they're in for much more than they bargained for as the Swedish friend is more recruiter than the friend they anticipated. It's nuanced though and they put the strangeness that surrounds them as mere cultural difference, which is admirable. Although by enlarge they're simply enamoured by the idyllic utopia they find themselves in and they are portrayed as being pretty stupid to be honest, despite their undergraduate status. Especially Will Poulter who plays the arrogant student with aplomb. He's very good at annoying, at least I always find him annoying. I don't know what it is, maybe it's that he reminds me of Sid, the sadistic kid in Toy Story.
Anyway, back to Midsommer. The ritualistic stuff is front and centre, with everything done for ceremony. It makes for wondrous cinema. Even the more brutal events that happen early on are almost swept aside with acceptance, what goes on in Sweden stays in Sweden. Of course, there's mortal danger and the luscious green fields are a disarming disguise as the comically named Father Odd and his community welcome the newcomers to their 9 day festival of Hargas. It's not long before the unease that we feel reaches the souls onscreen, as totemic signs are left, people are lost and rituals are slowly understood. It's not perfect, but it looks fantastic, builds really well, however it's quite predictable. I try not to put too many of any spoilers in these things, but one look at the poster for this, tells you things aren't going to end well. Despite its slow pace, it rattles along rather well as things get quite horrific for the visitors, but this for me fits into the journey being more enjoyable than the destination category, in that I didn't find the finale that satisfactory. I don't mind the hard cut finish, it can often work really well, but the end sequence was telegraphed a mile off and I was hoping for much much more. All in all though if you like creepy folk-tinged dramatic thrillers, this has you covered.

Here's a fun thought: viewers of American media are so used to black characters being tokenized that when Josh is deliberately left out many didn't see a reason to think harder about that. This movie hits differently if youve never been in a toxic relationship before. Ive never seen the ending as a twisted “happily ever after”. To me, its just a girl that has been manipulated in her vulnerable state by the insanity of a cult that offers conditional love in exchange for her silence and compliance. To call the ending an allegory for finding inner peace through positive support groups just feels wrong in this case, because the support group in question is more than a little malicious. Still, the film is phenomenal no matter how you decide to interpret it.

I'm a little late in commenting so I'm not sure if you'll notice this but as a cult survivor myself, I appreciate this video and explanation so much. I was born and raised by people who were recruited into the cult so for many years I knew little outside of its parameters of thought. While it was a bible-based cult, the tactics were all the same. At the time of its inception in the 80s, nearly all of the recruits were Gen-X teenagers from dysfunctional and abusive households. It was no wonder people like my parents were so susceptible to believing the cult when they were told how evil the world outside was. Anyone looking in would think we were just another suburban church with a warm and welcoming community with many finding great happiness and love upon joining. They thought they found their happy ending. Until shit would get real. Real fast. By the 90s most of those teens grew up and had families within the cult. Soon the very childhood dysfunction and abuse they sought to escape was reframed as child training to be further perpetuated. The very trauma that compelled them to seek out the cult continued in the next lot of children. The slightest things could be utilised by those in charge to inflict extreme sanctions upon adult and child alike. There were public humiliations, deliverances, relationships forced apart, forced marriage, and excommunications alike. This was no happy ending. Time outside the cult has shown me that while those years were certainly my worst, there's still a lot left to be desired with how things are in the world right now. We need to continue the fight for things like equality, better grassroots communities, healthier communication and emotional expression being championed, a sense of freedom of individuality that allows people to contribute greatly within their communities rather than the selfish individualism so often pushed, and a vigilance that prevents harmful actions being perpetuated in the name of belief. Society's flaws drive vulnerable people into the arms of abusive structures, be it a romantic partner, toxic friendship, or a cult. Continuing such a toxic cycle does not make for a happy ending.
